The FAI was mounted on the GAZ A car chassis which was itself a licenced copy of the Ford A. The chassis was a weakness and not strong enough to mount sufficient armour and armament. The FAI had a single 7.62mm DT machine gun in a turret. The armour was only 4-6mm. The FAI had a crew of 2 and was produced between 1933 and 1935 serving in the Spanish Civil War as well as the early years of WWII up to 1941. It was replaced by the BA-20.
