M4 Sherman with M26 Pershing Turret

Following the bitter experience of Normandy, the US set about designing more powerful tanks and tank destroyers to be armed with the 90mm gun. The M4 Sherman had the same turret ring diameter as the M26 Pershing design allowing the M26 turret with the D3 gun to be fitted to a late M4 Sherman. A prototype was created at the Detroit Arsenal however, it was never committed to production. Instead, resources were devoted to building the M26 Pershing.
