The M4, weighing in at 18 tons, was based on the chassis of the M3 Light Tank and was produced in two variants, one for anti aircraft guns and another for howitzers. The design featured two types of ammunition box with side tailgates to allow access to 90mm or 3" shells in pigeon holes or a rear combination box with a rear tailgate for 155mm, 8" or 240mm ammunition. A crane was fitted to help lift heavier projectiles. The M4 had sufficient room for 11 gun crew in addition to the driver.
