M-5 3" Anti Tank Gun on M-1 Carriage

Development of the M-5 begain in 1940 when the 3" T9 anti aircraft gun was combined with the breech, recoil system and carriage of the 105mm M2 howitzer. The M-5 on M-1 carriage was produced from December 1942. In November 1943 the flat 105mm howitzer shield was replaced with a sloped shield. Earlier guns were then modified with the new shield. In total, around 2,500 were produced. The M-5 was allocated to US Army tank destroyer battalions along with M3 Half Tracks to tow them.
