M12 155mm Gun Motor Carriage

The M12 was based on the M4 Sherman chassis with an armoured drivers compartment and the addition of a spade at the rear to absorb recoil. The gun itself was mounted in an open top platform. Produced in 1942 and 1943, 74 M12 were rolled out for use in the NW Europe campaign in 1944. They suffered from a lack of space for ammunition with only 10 projectiles being carried in the GMC itself. This lead the later development of the M30 Cargo Carrier for carrying crew and ammunition.
