The Renault AHN 4x2 Cargo Truck was developed in the late 1930s in response to the French Army's requirement for new vehicles. Civilian versions were too complex and not sufficiently standardised for military service leading to the development of the AHN 3.5 ton cargo truck. By 1941, the Renault AHN was produced for Wehrmacht service with production continuing until 1944.
