By the late war the Pz Kpfw III was obsolete and used mainly for command and artillery spotting vehicles. As Allied air superiority grew, the Germans converted older tank chassis to mount anti aircraft guns to provide mobile AA cover for armour and infantry. The Oswind mounted a 3.7cm Flak43/1 L/60 in an six sided open top turret mounted ontop of a Pz Kpfw III chassis allowing for 360 degree traverse. It was designed to complement the Pz Kpfw IV chassis AA tanks such as the Wirelwind and Ostwind
