Bishop Mk I

The Bishop was a self propelled 25 Pounder based on a Valentine chassis. Fulfilling a need for mobile artillery on the fast moving battlefields of North Africa the Bishop first saw service during the 2nd Battle of El Alamein in 1942. The Bishop had a number of design flaws. The Valentine turret was replaced with a boxy superstructure into which was fitted a 25 Pounder. This lead to the vehicle having a very high silhouette which was a distinct disadvance in the open desert.
