Savoia-Marchetti SM79

The Savoia-Marchetti SM79 "Sparviero" (Sparrowhawk) was an Italian bomber originally designed as a passenger transport. It was introduced in 1936 and first saw service during the Spanish Civil War. The SM79 had three engines, a distinctive hump in the fuselage and was constructed from welded steel tubes, plywood and fabric. This made the SM79 ideally suited as a torpedo bomber with its construction allowing downed aircraft top stay afloat for long enough for the crew to escape.
